Grant Programs

The Juvenile Justice Programs Office is involved in several grant projects.  Some of these grants are awarded thru a Request for Proposal process while others are sponsored by/thru this office.

A recent grant project was awarded from the United States Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Assistance with the intent to develop strategies to initiate and enhance planning for gender-specific programs to address the needs of females in the juvenile justice system, as well as at-risk young women around the State of Nevada.

Formula Grants
The Juvenile Justice Commission distributes funds to counties to promote and support their efforts to maintain compliance with the core requirements of the JJDP Act. These projects are an effective resource for keeping at-risk youth from entering the juvenile justice system.

An example is, the Innovative Local Law Enforcement and Community Policing program was established in 1997 to provide funding for law enforcement initiatives that create community projects targeting delinquency prevention.
Title V Grants

This grant program was established in 1995 to provide funding for juvenile delinquency prevention projects throughout the State of Nevada.  Title V programs include:

  • Carson City - Teen Pregnancy Prevention Program in Ron Wood Family Resource Center

  • Clark County - New Directions Intensive Supervision (Steps Program)

  • 6th Judicial District - Alternative Education Program (Humboldt, Lander and Pershing counties)

Enforcing Underage Drinking Laws
Established in 1998, the Juvenile Justice Programs Office coordinates activities designed to reduce the availability and consumption of alcoholic beverages by minors. The program includes sub-grants to community groups to design and implement local prevention projects, Stand Tall Don't Fall United Against Underage Drinking, and sub-grants to law enforcement entities to implement enforcement activities.

Stand Tall youth teams from around the state have adopted the mission statement "to glamorize and normalize alcohol free behavior through education, media advocacy and alcohol free activities."
Juvenile Accountability Block Grant (JAB)

Established in 1998 the Juvenile Justice Programs Office coordinates sub-grants to units of local government to implement accountability based projects in twelve federally defined purposes areas.  The state of Nevada also received funding for projects in the purpose areas.  Core Block Grant Programs include:

  • Assist in construction and renovation of detention programs and youth camps

  • Develop community service/restitution programs

  • Support Drug Courts

  • Fund additional juvenile Court Masters

  • Develop intensive supervision programs that provide gender specific programming

Challenge Grants provide funding for projects incorporating mental health needs, educational, and intensive aftercare programs for youth in the juvenile justice system. Every three years, the Nevada Juvenile Justice Commission chooses two of ten core programs areas to target.
Community Corrections Block Grant

  • Collaboration of community based resources in the development and implementation of the program.
  • No capital expense items
  • Compliance with NRS 62.020; Juvenile Justice Data Collection
  • Provide programs that will reduce commitments to state institutions
